Bypassing seniority of many officers, Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral R K Dhowan is all set to sail as the next Navy Chief. His appointment came a day after the Election Commission gave its approval for appointment of a new Navy chief when Admiral DK Joshi resigned on moral grounds following several mishaps at the sea.

The Government had formed a panel of five officers including Vice Admirals Shekhar Sinha (Western Command chief), R K Dhowan (Vice chief), Anil Chopra (Eastern Command chief), Satish Soni (Southern Command chief) and S P S Cheema (Strategic Forces Command chief) for the appointment.

Had  Naval Chief  Admiral Joshi retired after completing his due three-year tenure in 2015-end, Vice Admiral Soni would  have succeeded  as the next Navy chief in accordance to the defined line of succession.
